   What Jesus Taught About Faith

      #8 “Doubt Creates Failures”

Luke 22:32-34 “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.”

We are all familiar with Peter’s denial of Jesus but it is important to see what Jesus said was the cause. Jesus points out that the cause of his failure was because Peter’s faith would fail. Said another way Peter would be in a state of doubt and fear when he denies Jesus. In context Jesus then said when he regains his faith or is “converted” he would “strengthen” the other disciples. So doubt and fear not only creates failures but they also create weakness. These lessons are profound.

If we think about it every type of failure is usually because of a lack of faith and the presence of fear and doubt. It could be we move ahead because we don’t trust God to meet our need in a better way. Or we manifest negative behavior like Peter because we are in a state of fear.  We don’t do what we should because we doubt or we do something wrong because of fear but either way it is a faith issue.

Peter is a tremendous example of someone who exhibits great confidence when he is in a state of faith. But also manifest a tremendous lack of confidence at times when he is in a state of fear or doubt. He goes from walking on water to crying in panic. He moves from fighting for Jesus to denying Jesus because he moved from faith to fear. This is an important observation. He was the same man but with vastly different behaviors and outcomes.

There is no doubt that doubt creates failures! Whether those failures are moral or monetary at the bottom of it is doubt and fear. Faith produces positive behavior and doubts produces negative behavior. Faith produces confidence and certainty. Doubt produces a lack of confidence and uncertainty. That will lead to failures every time.

If all failure is linked to doubt and fear then all success is linked to faith!  Any road to restoration, redemption and renewal begins with a recapturing of our faith. The ability to believe positively will lead to the ability to behave positively, morally or any other productive behavior. The difference between what we can be and what we are is whether we are in a state of faith or doubt. Doubt is just another form of fear.
